Understanding Data Mesh
Data Mesh is a socio-technical approach that treats Data as a Product
and applies principles of domain-oriented decentralized data ownership and architecture. Unlike the traditional centralized data warehouses, Data Mesh encourages the distribution of data responsibilities across different domains within an organization. This approach promotes autonomy, scalability, and agility in managing data. The idea of Data Mesh was introduced by Zhamak Deghani in a very interesting blog post: How to Move Beyond a Monolithic Data Lake to a Distributed Data Mesh. Microsoft Fabric Overview
Microsoft Fabric is an all-in-one analytics solution for enterprises that covers everything from data movement to data science, Real-Time Analytics, and business intelligence. It offers a comprehensive suite of services, including data lake, data engineering, and data integration, all in one place.
Bringing it together
The Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework provides excellent guidance on how to roll-out a Data Mesh, combined with Microsoft Fabric Domains. Presently, the Data Mesh architecture of Microsoft Fabric primarily facilitates the organization of data into domains, empowering data consumers to filter and locate content based on domains. Additionally, it supports federated governance, allowing governance, currently managed at the tenant level, to be delegated to domain-level control. This enables each business unit or department to establish its unique rules and restrictions in alignment with its specific business requirements.
